The roll over is a classic trick! Your dog drops to his stomach, rolls over, and stands back up again!
You should teach roll over on carpet or on grass, as many dogs won't like to roll over on a hard surface.
It will be easier to teach roll over if he already knows down.
Here's how to teach roll over:
Use a treat to lure your dog into the down position by holding the treat near his nose and moving it to the ground between his front paws. Click and treat when his tummy touches the ground. Practice this several times.
Now repeat step one, but keep luring him with the treat until he rolls onto his side, click and treat. Practice this several times.
Now lure him with the treat as above, but keep going until he follows the treat all the way and rolls over. Click and treat when he rolls back on to his tummy. Practice this several times.
Now that he is rolling over every time to follow the treat, introduce the cue to roll over. Say, "roll over," and then lure him to roll over with the treat. Practice this several times saying the cue, before you lure him through the roll over.
Now, without a treat in your hand, give the cue and make the same hand movement to cause him to roll over, click and treat when he does. Practice this step several times.
Gradually make the hand movement further away from his face. Then gradually make the hand movement smaller and smaller until you don't have to do it anymore, and simply saying roll over causes him to roll over.
