Wave

This is how to teach your dog to wave his paw at you.

We teach wave by building on the shake. So be sure to teach your dog how to shake first, and then you can teach him how to wave.

Here's how to teach wave:

  1. Have your dog sit in front of you and ask him to shake. When he puts his paw out to shake your hand instead of taking his paw with your hand, stop short with your hand, and allow his paw to swipe the air, click the moment it does, and treat. Repeat this step twenty times clicking the moment his paw swipes the air and then treating him.

  2. Gradually reach less and less towards your dogs paw so that you're eventually only making a slight hand movement, clicking and treating each time he raises his paw and swipes the air. Repeat this step several times.

  3. When he is waving reliably, introduce the cue wave. Say "wave," and then make the slight hand movement towards his paw to get him to wave. Repeat this fifteen times.

  4. Gradually fade out your hand movement altogether so that the verbal cue wave is all you need to say to get him to wave.

You can then practice wave at a distance. Have him sit, take a step back, and ask him to wave. If he stays seated and waves click the moment he waves and treat. You can gradually take more steps back until he is waving to you over the other side of the room.

It's a cute trick!
